In August as the Transport Authority of Ethiopia was commenting on car importation in the country for the last fiscal year, the authority disclosed that a total of 117, 032 cars were imported. This was an increase even as the head of public relation for the Transport Authority, Yigzaw Dagne, said that some cars might have entered Ethiopia without being registered in the national database.

According to the public relation head, the increase in the number of imported cars in Ethiopia has been rising year after year. The total number of vehicles in Ethiopia last years was 825,448 up from 708,416 according to last year’s statistics.

The total number of vehicles in the database does not include all cars off the street and on the streets.

The increase in the number of vehicles imported in Ethiopia has contributed to the change in lifestyle for many people in Addis Ababa.
This has been revealed by the report that has also confirmed the increase in vehicle importation. Some years ago, people in the capital city of Ethiopia considered cars as such a prestigious thing and a symbol of high-class status and a luxury item. However, this has changed today even as the number of middle-class Ethiopians has increased. The middle class considers cars a necessity rather than a luxury as was regarded in the past. They look at vehicles as a means of making everyday activities easier and for business. The cars are also seen as a means of delivering goods to clients and commuting to work. The middle class in Ethiopia have demystified the once held about cars and this is credited to the increase in the number of the vehicle in Ethiopia’s capital city. They have found more uses for the car which have proved beneficial and economically viable.
